MRS. MARY “ARTIST” HODGES

Mrs. Mary "Artist" Thomas Hodges was born on November 28, 1932 in Americus, Georgia to the parentage of the late Mr. Alonzo Thomas and Mrs. Mable Hooks Thomas. She attended elementary and middle school in Americus, Georgia. Upon finishing middle school, she moved to Savannah, Georgia to live with her aunt and uncle, Guy and Gladys Hodges, there she enrolled in Beach High School, and became a part of their first graduating class. She was a very outstanding student and engaged in many extracurricular activities. Most people who met Artist were captivated by her beautiful speaking voice. She was frequently asked if she was of British decent.

Upon her graduation, she went to Chicago, Illinois for a time and realized that she needed to return home to Americus. In Americus, she met her husband Teddy who enlisted in the United States Army. After her husband received his orders, she relocated with him to Japan and there they lived for several years. Artist loved living in Japan and often talked about how much she enjoyed living there. She kept many memorabilia from her stay, especially Kimonos, she had several which she wore frequently. After her sojourn in Japan, Artist moved to New York City where she attended and graduated from the most outstanding secretarial school in the city. She was then able to secure a position at the Random House Corporation in the Bennett Serf Section as a literature reader and worked there for over thirty years until her retirement.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Teddy Hodges. Eventually, she returned to Americus to care for her mother, Mrs. Mable Thomas. She departed this life on August 30, 2010, and will be missed by many who loved her.
