MR. ARTHUR MERRITT

Mr. Arthur B. Merritt was born in Webster County, Georgia on August 11, 1939 to the parentage of the late Mr. Hope Merritt, Sr. and the late Mrs. Ida Mae Johnson Merritt. He began his education in the public schools of Webster County and after his family moved to Americus, GA, he continued at McCoy Hill School until the age of 16. He joined the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Webster County at an early age under the Rev. J.W. Nealy. As a young man, he moved to Michigan and built a career in construction; he also married and started a family. He followed in his father’s footsteps and became a member of the Fraternal Order of the Freemasons. He returned to Americus in the early 1980’s where he worked for the Turner’s Manufacturing Company. He is preceded in death by two brothers, Hope Merritt, Jr. and Phil L. Merritt, Sr. He transitioned on July 8, 2010.

He leaves to cherish his memory, seven children, Mr. Reginald Merritt, Sr. of Americus, GA, Mrs. Joyce (James) Cutts of Desoto, GA, Mrs. Ann (Thaddeus) Harris of Preston, GA, Ms. Pauline Jackson, Ms. Betty Jean Jowers, Mr. Emmanuel (DaTasha) Merritt, Sr., Grand Rapids, MI and Mr. Kenneth Lockhart, Madison, WI; six brothers, Mr. Will (Pat) Merritt, Mr. James (Willa) Merritt, Decatur, GA, Mr. Benjamin Austin, Las Vegas, NV, Mr. Jessie (Beverly) Austin, Houston, TX, Mr. James (Ethera) Austin, New York, NY and Mr. Otis Austin, New York, NY; two sisters, Ms. Josephine Merritt and Mr. Carolyn Melinda Merritt; two aunts, Ms. Mary Terry and Ms. Mozelle Johnson, Melbourne, FL; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a devoted god-daughter, Ms. Angela Merritt; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, including a devoted cousin, Mr. Willie Clyde "Sambo" Johnson, Americus, GA other relatives and friends, including devoted friends, Mr. Charlie "Jap" Flint, Ms. Hattie Stewart, Mr. Edgar Clark, Ms. Tina Clark, Mr. Ezell Shelton and his Ravenwood Community Family.
