MRS. DOROTHY HANSLEY APPLE was born September 3, 1912, in Frederica, Kent County, Delaware to the parentage of the late Mrs. Maude Mae Mosley Hansley and Mr. George Edward Hansley. Dorothy graduated as high school valedictorian in 1930. She received a scholarship from Delaware State College and graduated in 1935 Cum Laude. In 1937 Dorothy received a Master of Science degree in chemistry from Clark Atlanta University and later accepted a teaching position from the Southern Teachers Association in the chemistry department at Georgia Normal and Agricultural College in Albany, Georgia, now Albany State University. During the 1930’s Ms. Hansley worked in a summer school program in Americus, Georgia, where she met, Mr. Alfred A. Apple, Jr., who owned City Barber Shop on East Forsyth Street. On September 5, 1938, the two were united in Holy Matrimony in Dover, Delaware. They spent 47 years together at their home in Americus, GA. In 1938, Mrs. Dorothy Hansley Apple joined the Campbell Chapel African Methodist Church. She soon became president of the DYWYK Club, a community outreach ministry. Later she became a member of the Dunbar Club. In September 1941, Mrs. Apple began teaching at Staley High School, but left in 1956 to work towards her PH.D at the University of Pennsylvania. She later returned and after 13 years at Staley, was transferred to Sumter County High School. Mrs. Apple won numerous awards during her teaching career among them, Teacher of the Year in 1958. In 1970, following desegregation Mrs. Apple was transferred to Union High School in Leslie, GA. While there she received the honor of second runner-up in the Teachers Hall of Fame in the State of Georgia, and in 1974 was selected as Third District Science Teacher. After 45 years, Dorothy retired from education. She wrote two autobiographies, the second one entitled “A Gathering of Blessings.” She also founded the Dorothy H. Apple Scholarship Fund for a deserving college-bound senior of Campbell Chapel AME Church and the Dorothy Apple Young Adult Choir. She faithfully served as a steward, member of the Brantley-Childers Women’s Missionary Society, and Mother of the Church. She became a resident of Sumter Retirement Village, Plains, Georgia in 2006.
